Smyrna is a
town in Chenango County,New York ,United States . The population was 1,418 at the 2000 census. Smyrna is named after a coastal city in ancient Greece.The Town of Smyrna contains a village named Smyrna. The town is on the county's north border.
History
The town was settled around 1792. The Town of Smyrna was founded in 1808 as the "Town of Stafford" from part of the Town of Sherburne. Within a month, the name was changed to "Smyrna."

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,418 people, 472 households, and 371 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 33.7 people per square mile (13.0/km²). There were 608 housing units at an average density of 14.4/sq mi (5.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.45% White, 0.92% Native American, 0.14% Asian, and 0.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.28% of the population.There were 472 households out of which 40.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.1% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% were non-families. 16.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.35.
In the town the population was spread out with 32.2% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $31,607, and the median income for a family was $34,125. Males had a median income of $25,313 versus $21,111 for females. The
