- Fish Slough Area of Critical Environmental Concern
The Slough Area of Critical Environmental Concern is located near Bishop, California on the western side of the Chalfant Valley (or north Owens Valley). Its 36,000 acres (146 km²) were designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) in 1982. The ACEC is an oasis in the middle of the otherwise arid Volcanic Tableland.
One plant, Fish Slough milk vetch, cannot be found anywhere else in the world outside of the Fish Slough ACEC. The alkali Mariposa lily is also a rare plant found in the ACEC. The ACEC is located in the transition zone between the Mojave Desert and Great Basin biomes.
