The "Alan A. Dale" was originally a Danish cargo
ship named "Norvest", convert|131|m|ft long, convert|17|m|adj=on wide and 4,700 tons. After the outbreak ofWorld War II she remained in port in theUnited States . She was one of 84 foreign ships seized by theUnited States under theShip Requisition Act , signed onJune 6 ,1941 . She was subsequently reflagged underPanama and operated by theUnion Steam Ship Company of New Zealand . On24 December 1944 she was sunk by a German Biber one-mansubmarine in theWesterschelde near Antwerp. The wreck was removed during June 2003 as part of an operation to improve shipping access to Antwerp.See also
