The Sterile Recordsrecord label was formed inLondon in 1979 byNigel Ayers andCaroline K of the post-industrial music groupNocturnal Emissions . With a background in themail art networks, their intention was to create and promote a new form of music. Sterile Records’ approach was a combination of the experiments ofmusique concrete andFluxus combined with the critical eye ofconceptual art and the spontaneity and energy ofpunk rock . The dark humour ofindustrial music and the incomprehensible nonsense of variousultra-left ist political fractions were an essential part of the mix.Sterile Records used both commercial and non-commercial media to deliveranti-capitalist messages, multi-coloured noise andinformation overload . Growing fromcassette culture , output included records andvideotapes .Caroline K left the label in1983 .In 1986 the label was effectively dissolved as Ayers turned his attention to setting up the Earthly Delights company.
