- Izafat
The Izafat (also "Izafah") ( _fa. اضافه) is a current-Persian language grammatical construct which links two words together. The function of the connecting vocal -e approximately corresponds to that of the English preposition of. It is also used extensively in
Urdu mainly inpoetic settings.Examples:"aab-e-chasm"': tears (verb. Water-of-eyes).
The term is inherited from Arabic Idafa which means a genitive construction. It is also traditionally used in Turkic languages where it applies to a typologically quite different structure.
Ottoman Turkish did use it extensively, in its original function (the official name of theOttoman Empire was "Devlet-i Âliye-i Osmaniyye") although there it is transcribed as "-i" rather than "-e".
