This version featured child star
Shirley Jane Temple as Sara Crewe and took great liberties with the original story. Although it maintained the novel's Victorian London setting, it introduced several new characters and storylines and used theSecond Boer War and theSiege of Mafeking as a backdrop to the action. Hubert Minchin, played by actorArthur Treacher , replaced the character Miss Amelia from the novel. Temple and Treacher had a showcased musical number together, performing the song "Knocked 'Em in the Old Kent Road;" Temple also appeared in an extended ballet sequence. The film was given a happier ending than the book: Captain Crewe was found alive. The Little Princess was the first Temple movie to be filmed completely in
Technicolor . It was also her last major success as a child star atTwentieth-Century Fox , and remains one of her most well-known films.Cast
