Thomas Joseph Shahan (
September 11 ,1857 –March 9 ,1932 ) was an American Roman Catholictheologian and educator, born atManchester, New Hampshire , educated atMontreal College (1872), at the American College, and at the Propaganda in Rome. He studied at theRoman Seminary (J.U.L., 1889) and at theUniversity of Berlin (S.T.D., 1882), then served as professor of Church history and patrology atThe Catholic University of America (1891-1909) and president of theCatholic Educational Association in 1909-14 and theNational Conference of Catholic Charities in 1910-14. Professor Shahan was an editor of theCatholic Encyclopedia (published in 1913). Bishop Shalan also founded theBasilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.Published works
