Deckham is a suburb of Gateshead, bordered by Low Fell, Felling & Sheriff Hill.
It is situated on the B1296 Old Durham Road which is a former route of the famous Great North Road.
Although Deckham was once a separate settlement in its own right, urban spawl created increasing merging of surrounding settlements. The collective area has grown to such an extent that Deckham can only be distinguished from other areas by a row of shops.
Deckham ceased being an independent town in the historic county of County Durham and became formally incorporated into the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead after the Local Government Act of 1974.
Deckham is home to a thriving Community Centre called the Elgin Centre which encompasses Route 26 Community Project, Deckham Children's Centre and Gateshead council.
