Page One (zh-t|t=葉壹堂) is a bookstore chain and publisher founded in Singapore by Mark Tan (zh-t|t=陳家強), with locations in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Thailand. Traditionally focused on English books, it has recently stepped up inroads into the Chinese market.

History

In 1983, Page One was originally the art and design magazine agent of Kinokuniya Shoten, a Japanese bookstore chain. As Page One grew to encompass different genres of books and magazines, it became an independent bookstore.

Features

Page One draws from Singapore's bilingual tradition, and has separate English and Chinese sections in its stores. It is currently the bilingual bookstore with the greatest number of foreign titles in Asia.

Design

Mark Tan and his brother, engineer Kay Ngee Tan (zh-t|t=陳家毅), uniquely incorporated Southeast Asian art into their stores. For instance in Taipei, Vietnamese, Burmese and Thai etc., artworks were specially designed for the store, which customers could also purchase.

Southeast Asian clothworks decorate Page One stores and the decor is changed every season. This design initiative brought about the rise of "giant"-sized bookstores in Asia.
