Gobar Guha

Jatindracharan Guha (March 13, 1892, Calcutta- Jaunary 3, 1972), popularly known as Gobar Guha (or as Gobar Goho in the United States and Europe) was a notable Indian wrestler and practitioner of Pehlwani. His father's name was Ramcharan. He studied in Vidyasagar School, Calcutta and passed the Entrance examination at the age of 17. He received his initial training from his father and his uncle Ambikacharan, who was also a noted wrestler. He took part in many wrestling bouts during his Europe tours in 1910 and 1912-15 and Europe and the United States tour from 1920-26 and won a number of them. Gobar Guha is best known for his world light heavyweight championship win against catch wrestler Ad Santel on August 24, 1921 in San Francisco. His son Manik was a also a wrestler. [Sengupta, S. Gobar Guha was the first Asian to win a World Light Heavyweight Championship in the United States. Recently a street in north Kolkata has been named after him.
