Serratelli is a
Newark, New Jersey native and attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the Ironbound section of Newark. He graduated fromSeton Hall Preparatory School in 1961. He attendedSeton Hall University for 2 years then moved to the Darlington section of Mahwah, NJ where theSeminary of the Immaculate Conception was located. After 2 years of Philosophical studies he was sent toRome where he attended thePontifical Gregorian University and resided at thePontifical North American College .As a Priest
Ordained for the Archdiocese of Newark in 1968, Serratelli worked in a parish for a short period of time and then was quickly appointed to teach at the seminary. Archbishop
Peter Leo Gerety sent him back to Rome where he attained two advanced degrees, STD (Doctorate in Sacred Theology) and SSL (Licentiate in Sacred Scripture).He returned to the Archdiocese of Newark after completing his degrees and continued to teach scripture at Seton Hall University School of Theology for about 20 more years. Serratelli also held other positions during this time, including
rector of the College of the Immaculate Conception Seminary at St. Andrew's Hall. His Holiness, Pope John Paul II named him aPrelate of Honor and he received the title ofMonsignor in 1998.While serving in the
Archdiocese of Newark , he was a member of the following: College of Consultors, Commission for the Men's Apostolate, Finance Council, Presbyteral Council, and the Priestly Vocations Board.As a Bishop

After McCarrick was sent toWashington, D.C. andJohn J. Myers became the new Archbishop, Serratelli becameVicar General for Newark.As a member of the
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) inWashington, DC , he serves as chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, chairman of the Ad hoc Committee for the Review of Scripture Translations and is a member of the following: Task Group on Liturgy with Children, Task Force for the Review of theLectionary , Ad hoc Committee for the Review of theCatechism , Ad hoc Committee for the Spanish Bible for the Church in America, Committee on Doctrine, Committee on theAmerican College of Louvain , and Committee for Women in the Church and Society. In addition. he is a member of the following: Board of Bishops of theNew Jersey Catholic Conference ; Board of Trustees atAssumption College ,Mendham, NJ ; Board of Trustees at theCollege of St. Elizabeth ,Convent Station, NJ ; Board of Trustees atSeton Hall University and Board of Overseers at Immaculate Conception Seminary.In
2004 Serratelli attained his current position as Bishop of Paterson. He is also the representative for the United States on theInternational Commission on English in the Liturgy . He is the co-chairperson for the Vatican of the International Theological Consultation between Catholics and Baptists.
