Axis Communications AB (OMX|SSE5150|AXIS) is a manufacturer of IT equipment, mostly known for its print servers and network cameras. According to its latest annual report, it has sold over 1,000,000 network cameras, thus claiming to be the world leader in that market.

Most of Axis' equipment contain an embedded computer with some flash memory and running a custom version of Linux. One of its major breakthroughs in technology was the development of JFFS, which extended the life time of the devices' flash memory.

Network Cameras

Axis have been manufacuring network cameras since 1996, having sold more than 1,000,000 since that time. Their first model, the Axis 200, boasted a web interface as its main attraction, which has been built into Axis's whole range of cameras ever since. Axis continue to lead the market in their range of network cameras, which they claim is increasing by 40% annually.

In September 2008, Axis Communications along with Sony Corp. and Bosch Security Systems announced [http://www.sourcesecurity.com/companies/micro-site/axis-communications/news/co-227-ga-co-289-ga-co-3289-ga.2451.html] that they will cooperate to create a global open forum for the development of a standard network interface for network video products. The forum is introduced as ONVIF [http://www.onvif.org] (Open Network Video Interface Forum).
