WCUE is an AM radio station licensed to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, USA operating on 1150 kHz. It operates as a noncommercial educational station and serves the Akron, Ohio market. The station broadcasts the religious programming of Family Radio.

History

WCUE was originally licensed to Akron and was a daytime-only station, finally achieving nighttime operation by changing its city of license to Cuyahoga Falls and constructing a six-tower directional array. In the 1970s, WCUE was a popular Top 40 radio station. It abandoned the popular music format in 1981 when it sold by WCUE Radio, Inc. to Sackett Broadcasting Co. (studios were on Sackett Avenue in Cuyahoga Falls) which installed the Music Of Your Life standards format aimed at older adults. It then changed to a middle-of-the-road format in 1984. Ownership was transferred from Sackett Broadcasting to the non-profit Family Radio, Inc. (headed by Harold Camping) of Oakland, California on October 22, 1986. Technically, the station was donated to Family Radio, since no money changed hands. On August 3, 1988, the transmitter was moved and daytime power was increased from 1,000 to 2,500 watts and to 5,000 watts on February 2, 1990. The license was changed from a commercial to non-commercial station on November 13, 2000, and Family Radio obtained a main station waiver on September 26, 2002, allowing it function solely as a translator for Family Radio's programming from KEAR in San Francisco.
