Bruern or Bruern Abbey is a village and
civil parish in theWest Oxfordshire district ofOxfordshire ,England . According to the 2001 census, it had a population of 62. The village is on theRiver Evenlode , close to the border withGloucestershire , and about six miles north of Burford.Cistercian Abbey
The village once contained a
Cistercian Abbey founded in 1147 by Nicholas Basset as a daughter house ofWaverley Abbey in Surrey. It was dissolved in 1536 and became the property of Sir Anthony Cope. A large 18th century house (private) may occupy the site. A nearby Georgian cottage contains a three bay vaulted chamber which may relate to the monastery.References
