Boxford, Suffolk

Boxford is a village and civil parish in the Babergh district of Suffolk, England, situated about six miles east of Sudbury straddling the River Box and skirted by the Holbrook. According to Eilert Ekwall the meaning of the village name is "the ford where box tree grows". The Domesday Book records the population of Boxford in 1086 to be 18. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 1,258.

Once a thriving Wool Town, the village remains a proud and friendly community, with two remaining pubs (The Fleece and The White Hart), community shops, a surviving post office, a busy butcher, a garage and petrol station, a well-respected primary school and pre-school group, and of course its flint-clad church. The older buildings that attract tourists from the village's namesake in MA, USA are now complemented by modern housing ranging from the 1960s to the modern day on the fringes of the village and behind the main Broad Street.

John Winthrop, a founder of the city of Boston, MA, grew up in the area in the pretty hamlet of Edwardstone and his grave at Groton church is frequented by visitors from a number of New England towns that share their names with local East Anglian villages.

Copella fruit juices are made at orchards at Hill Farm on the outskirts of Boxford.

Perhaps you're wondering who the character with the pet lioness riding a motorbike and sidecar on the Boxford village sign is? Tornado Smith originated from Boxford and braved the 'Wall of Death' with his lion riding shotgun! He lived in the White Hart Pub in Boxford and at that time his father owned it. The 'Wall of Death' is expected to pay a visit to the pub yard again someday in the near future.
