William Arthur Parkin (born
February 15 ,1952 inWhangarei ) is a formerfield hockey player fromNew Zealand , who was a member of the national team that won the golden medal at the1976 Summer Olympics inMontreal .He's considered to be one of New Zealand's outstanding players in history, and was selected for four Olympics, though he attended just three, missing the
1980 Summer Olympics because of the boycott. He captained New Zealand in1983 at the Pentangular Trophy inKuala Lumpur , and at the1984 Summer Olympics inLos Angeles, California .After retiring as a player, Parkin has seldom been far from hockey. He was instrumental in putting together the national coaching scholarship programme and in
1992 he attended the1992 Summer Olympics inBarcelona as the trainer of both the men's and women's teams, drawing on his background as a physical education teacher.Parkin has coached the University club team in
Auckland and was involved in junior hockey. He taught at Mt Roskill Grammar for some years, and is a keen and well-performed amateurgolf er.
