Arthur Parkin

Arthur Parkin

William Arthur Parkin (born February 15, 1952 in Whangarei) is a former field hockey player from New Zealand, who was a member of the national team that won the golden medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

He's considered to be one of New Zealand's outstanding players in history, and was selected for four Olympics, though he attended just three, missing the 1980 Summer Olympics because of the boycott. He captained New Zealand in 1983 at the Pentangular Trophy in Kuala Lumpur, and at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

After retiring as a player, Parkin has seldom been far from hockey. He was instrumental in putting together the national coaching scholarship programme and in 1992 he attended the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona as the trainer of both the men's and women's teams, drawing on his background as a physical education teacher.

Parkin has coached the University club team in Auckland and was involved in junior hockey. He taught at Mt Roskill Grammar for some years, and is a keen and well-performed amateur golfer.
