Selwyn Maister

Selwyn Maister

Selwyn Gerald Maister (born May 24, 1946 in Christchurch) is a former field hockey player from New Zealand, who was a member of the national team that won the golden medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

He is the older brother of fellow Olympian Barry. Selwyn, a centre half, was chosen to represent New Zealand at four successive Olympics, from 1968 until 1980, having made his Kiwi debut in 1965. He captained the team in 1973-1974. Maister attended Christchurch Boys High School and made such a sports and academic impression that he was rewarded with a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University.

There Maister earned his blue and represented the University at hockey for three years. On his return to his native country he became the head of Applied Sciences at Christchurch Polytechnic and held the position for thirty years, until being appointed to head the Canterbury Regional Sports Trust.

Maister has stayed very close to hockey. He was coach Jan Borren's assistant with the New Zealand Women's Team for four years leading up to and after the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, has coached the Canterbury women's team and still coaches at senior men's club level in Christchurch. He has also been a national men's selector.
