Portland stone is a
limestone from theJurassic period quarried on theIsle of Portland ,Dorset . The quarries consist of beds of white-grey limestone separated bychert beds. It has been used extensively throughout theBritish Isles , notably in major public buildings inLondon such asSt Paul's Cathedral andBuckingham Palace . It is also exported to many countries - Portland stone is used in theUnited Nations headquarters building inNew York city , for example.The term "
