Ï is a symbol used in various languages written with the
Latin alphabet .In Afrikaans, Dutch and French, <ï> is used where two vowels are next to one another and indicates the correct emphasis and pronunciation of such a word. For example in words like Maïs (Dutch/French), Oekraïne (Dutch/Afrikaans) or in the word
naïve .In the transcription of the languages of the Amazon, <ï> is used to represent the high central vowel IPA| [ɨ] .
