- Paradas
The Paradas are a people mentioned in ancient Indian texts such as the
Manu Smriti , variousPuranas , theRamayana and theMahabharata . In Puranic literature, they are also referred to as "Varadas" and "Paritas". "Paradas" and "Paritas" are sometimes equated to the "Paladas" and "Palidas" of theEdicts of Ashoka , and the "Paradene " tribe ofPtolemy (see below), and may be identical with the archaeologically documentedParatarajas .Location
The
Vayu Purana andMatsya Purana locate the tribe on the upper course of theAmu Darya (a.k.a. Chaksu) andSyr Darya rivers inCentral Asia Alexander's Invasion of India, p. 57] .The
Mahabharata , however, associates the Paradas with thetribe s ofUttarapatha , and places them on theSailoda River in theXinjiang province ofChina .The
Ramayana locates the people in the trans-Himalaya n territories, i.e. in theSakadvipa [Ramayana Kisk. Kanda, 43-12] .Edicts of Ashoka
Many different populations were the object of the
Ashoka ’s proselytism, among them the "Palidas", thought to be the Paradas:: "Here in the king's domain among theYavanas , theKambojas , the Nabhakas, the Nabhapamkits, the Bhojas, the Pitinikas, the Andhras and the Palidas, everywhere people are following Beloved-of-the-Gods' instructions in Dhamma." Rock Edict Nb13 (S. Dhammika)The "Panca-ganah"
Numerous
Puranic texts associate the Paradas with theKamboja ,Saka ,Yavana andPahlava tribes, and brand them together as "Panca-ganah " ("five hordes"). These five hordes were military allies of theHaihaya andTaljunga Kshatriya s of theYadava line, and were chiefly responsible for dethroningKing Bahu ofKosala . Later,King Sagar a, son of Bahu, was able to defeat the Haihayas and Taljungas together with the five hordes.Divestment of Kshatriyahood
According to Puranic accounts [
Manusmriti X.43-44] , King Sagara had divested the Paradas and other members of the "Panca-ganah" of their nobleKshatriya hood and demoted them to thebarbaric caste ofMlechchas , due to their non-observance of sacredBrahmanical codes and neglect of thepriestly class . Before their defeat at the hands of King Sagara, these five-hordes were called "Kshatriya-pungava" ("foremost among the Kshatriyas").Annihilation in "Kali Yuga"
Puranic texts such as
Vayu Purana state that theUdichya tribes, including the "Panca-ganah", theGandhara s,Tushara s,Khasa s,Lampaka s,Madhyadesi s,Vindhya s,Apranta s,Dakshinatya s,Dravida s,Pulinda s andSimhala s, would be proceeded against and annihilated byKalki inKali Yuga .Association with the "Paradene"
The Paradas of
Sanskrit texts have been identified with the "Paradene " tribe mentioned by the geographerPtolemy . The "Paradene" lived in Western India in the interior ofGedrosia or Balochistan in the post-Christian period. This shows that the Paradas had moved to the western region of India aroundChristian times. This movement of the Paradas appears to have been associated with the well known tribal movements of severalCentral Asia n tribes, which had occurred around the second century prior to the Christian era.ee also
