Newton began his career as a youth player with West Ham United, where he was a member of their in 1999, scoring in the second leg of the final in an aggregate 9–0 win over Coventry City. He was loaned to Portsmouth in July 1999 and made his league debut the following month in Portsmouth's 2–1 Championship win at home to Sheffield United. He returned to West Ham at the end of August and on 25 September 1999 made his Premiership debut for West Ham, when he appeared as a second-half substitute forMarc Keller in West Ham's 1–0 defeat away to Coventry City. Later that season he appeared as a substitute in West Ham's 3–1 win away toNK Osijek in theUEFA Cup and in April 2000 was a late substitute forScott Minto in West Ham's 5–0 win at home to Coventry.
