Regional profile
Calgary is, by far, the most conservative major city in Canada. This political leaning goes back to the days prior to Alberta's creation as a province, when what was to become Southern Alberta was selected over Northern Alberta for the route of the new Canadian Pacific Railway under the auspices of Prime Minister John A. Macdonald. Only three Liberals have ever been elected to the federal parliament from Calgary ridings.
Like rural Alberta, it has always gone for the most right-wing party on the ballot in recent years - with one exception: Joe Clark in Calgary Centre in 2000. With Clark having retired, Calgary returned to a Conservative sweep in 2004 and 2006 and is expected to do so again in the next election. The Liberals have some support, primarily in the central part of Calgary, but not enough to contend for any seats. The New Democratic Party are barely on the radar screen here, but the Green Party are stronger in Calgary than most other areas, and could pull some respectable results.
