8991 Solidarity

8991 Solidarity

8991 Solidarity is an asteroid previously designated "mp|1980 PV|1". It was discovered on August 6, 1980 at the European Southern Observatory in Cerro La Silla, Chile.

The asteroid was named as a result of the September 11, 2001 attacks against the Twin Towers in New York City. As a commemorative gesture, the IAU's Committee for the Nomenclature of Small Bodies chose three objects discovered in observatories on different continents and christened them with names representing some of the most basic and universal human values. Their selections were 8990 Compassion, 8992 Magnanimity, and of course 8891 Solidarity.
