Felliscliffe

Felliscliffe

Felliscliffe is a civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, in Nidderdale, Harrogate borough. It is an ancient Nidderdale township, first mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Fyle's gyffe', later, 'Felagh's cliff' from the Old Norse.

It is about four miles south-west of Ripley and seven miles from Knaresborough, close to the village of Hampsthwaite outside the spa town of Harrogate. The parish includes the village of Kettlesing and part of the US intelligence-gathering base at Menwith Hill.

The parish served the nearby Fountains Abbey with flax, with monastery paths leading along Tang Beck - a tributary of the River Nidd - still in existence. Traces of Iron Age and Roman settlements have been discovered in the parish, indicating that it has been inhabited continuously for several millennia.
