The free GNU Eprints.org software, first released in 2000, is the first [ [http://www.dlib.org/dlib/october00/10inbrief.html#HARNAD D-Lib - In Brief (October 2000) ] ] and most widely used [ [http://archives.eprints.org/eprints.php?action=browse#version Browse (ROAR) ] ] software for creating Open Archives Initiative (OAI)-compliant institutional repositories in which to self-archive research articles and theses in order to make them open access so as to maximize their usage [ [http://eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk/10713/ Earlier Web Usage Statistics as Predictors of Later Citation Impact - ECS EPrints Repository ] ] and citation impact.
