Kamensk-Uralsky ( _ru. Ка́менск-Ура́льский) is a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Kamenka and Iset Rivers (Ob basin). Population: 186,153 (2002 Census); 173,000 (1972); 51,000 (1939).

The mayor of the city is Viktor Yakimov.

History

Kamensky Zavod was founded in the late 17th century as a settlement next to the cast iron smelting factory and foundry, commissioned on October 15, 1701. The first 2 centuries of existence it was known for its cannons - best ones in the world.

First schools opened in Kamensk in 1724. In 1825–1829 the cast iron smelting factory went through a reconstruction. Railway traffic started at 6 December 1885. The first library opened in 1899.1934 - Sinarsky Pipe Works established.1939 - Ural Aluminium Factory established.Kamensk was granted city status in 1935 and renamed Kamensk-Uralsky in 1940.

During the II World War the city became the third by the population in the region and keep promising position now.

Economy

Kamensk-Uralsky is one of the most fast-growing cities in the region. Industrial production is represented by all industries of national economy: fuel-energy and metallurgical complex, machinery construction, light and food industry, transport and communication. The most developed industry is metallurgical production, particularly non-ferrous metallurgy, which occupies 69% of the total volume of industrial production of the city and 12,9 % of the region.Ferrous metallurgy takes 17,5% (3,9% of the region)Machinery construction and metal-working - 3,7% (1,3%)Power industry - 3,5% (1,8%)

4 main companies (Sinarsky Pipe Works, Kamensk Uralsky Metallurgical Works, SUAL-UAZ and Oktyabr Factory) hold 75% of the total value of industrial production.

inarsky Pipe Works

As an enterprise putting out steel, stainless and cast iron pipes, SinTZ is recognized as one of the "G-7" among the biggest specialized plants in Russia. The annual number of contracts entered for manufacture and shipment amounts to over three thousand, covering more than 12 thousand items. The SinTZ products are employed at all oil and gas production works, machine-building plants, power plants and many other construction and public services organizations. The Sinarsky Pipe Works is a modern, reliable, dynamic and developing enterprise.

Kamensk Uralsky Metallurgical Works (KUMW)

KUMW was founded as a mill of special metallurgy belonging to the Ministry of Aircraft Industry for providing aircraft construction with semifinished products from aluminum and magnesium alloys. Building of the first mill stage was accomplished in 1944.In 1945-1992 the mill has become one of the leading enterprises of the special metallurgy. Realization of restructurization and diversification of the enterprise has allowed to liquidate unprofitable production lines, master output new kinds of products, come to foreign markets, and significantly increase work efficiency of the mill. In April 2000 KUMW joined Russian Association of Metal Traders (RAMT). In May 2000 on decision of RAMT and the Ministry of Economics of the Russian Federation, on results of the all-Russian competition, KUMW became a winner in a nomination "The best marketing sales service among metallurgical enterprises of Russia". Since 1998 till December 2000 KUMW has taken part in 55 exhibitions and has been awarded with 18 diplomas, two silver and one gold medal. Mercury prize, and 8 gratitude letters. At present we are manufacturing ingots, flat rolled products, sections, welded, extruded and drill tubes and pipes, bars and rods, wire, die-forgings, including wheels for cars and trucks, forgings, ring billets, heat-exchangers for refrigerators, powder coated sections and constructions, corrugated sheets from aluminum, aluminum and magnesium alloys. The main direction in development of the mill is quality. All production lines and all products were certified by German company TUV in 1998.Nowadays KUMW is a strong, dynamically developing enterprise with its own share of the market, with existing reputation of a reliable partner, and with great potential for the future. Mill's products are supplied to Russia, CIS, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy-USA, Finland, India, China, and other countries of the world.

Culture and education

There are 123 different cultural establishments in Kamensk-Uralsky: 10 educational institutions (4 music schools, 4 schools of art, 2 schools of drawing); 90 public libraries; 5 theatres; 11 clubs; 3 cinemas.

There are branches of the Ural State Technical University and of the Ural Istitute of Economics, Management and Law in the city.
