1990 FIFA World Cup qualification (CAF)

Listed below are the dates and results for the 1990 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds for the African zone (CAF). For an overview of the qualification rounds, see the article "1990 FIFA World Cup qualification".

A total of 26 CAF teams entered the competition. However, fb|MRI and fb|MOZ's entries were rejected by FIFA due to debts to FIFA. The African Zone was allocated 2 places (out of 24) in the final tournament.

There would be three rounds of play:
*First Round: Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria and Zaire, the 8 best ranked teams according to FIFA, received byes and advanced to the Second Round directly. The remaining 16 teams were paired up to play knockout matches on a home-and-away basis. The winners would advance to the Second Round.
*Second Round: The 16 teams were divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each. The teams would play against each other on a home-and-away basis. The group winners would advance to the Final Round.
*Final Round: The 4 teams were paired up to play knockout matches on a home-and-away basis. The winners would qualify.

First Round

November 11, 1988, Khartoum, Sudan - fb|SUD 1 - 2 fb-rt|ANG

"Angola" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 2-1.

July 16, 1988, Kampala, Uganda - fb|UGA 1 - 0 fb-rt|MWI

July 30, 1988, Lilongwe, Malawi - fb|MWI 3 - 1 fb-rt|UGA

"Malawi" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 3-2.

June 3, 1988, Tripoli, Libya - fb|LBY 3 - 0 fb-rt|BFA

July 3, 1988, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso - fb|BFA 2 - 0 fb-rt|LBY

"Libya" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 3-2.

August 7, 1988, Accra, Ghana - fb|GHA 0 - 0 fb-rt|LBR

August 21, 1988, Monrovia, Liberia - fb|LBR 2 - 0 fb-rt|GHA

"Liberia" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 2-0.

August 5, 1988, Tunis, Tunisia - fb|TUN 5 - 0 fb-rt|GUI

August 21, 1988, Conakry, Guinea - fb|GUI 3 - 0 fb-rt|TUN

"Tunisia" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 5-3.

fb|LES|1987 withdrew, so "fb|ZIM" advanced to the Second Round automatically.

fb|RWA|1962 withdrew, so "fb|ZAM" advanced to the Second Round automatically.

fb|TOG withdrew, so "fb|GAB" advanced to the Second Round automatically.

January 20, 1989, Tripoli, Libya - fb|LBY 0 - 2 fb-rt|ALG:FIFA awarded Algeria a 2-0 win because Libya forfeited. Later, Libya withdrew, and their match results were annulled.
