- Yuri Bogolyubsky
Yuri Bogolyubsky ( _ru. Юрий Боголюбский), known as Giorgi Rusi ( _ka. გიორგი რუსი, "George the Rus") in Georgia, was a Rus' prince of
Novgorod (1172 -1175 ). Married to Queen RegnantTamar of Georgia , he was a consort of the Kingdom of Georgia from1185 until being expelled from the country in1188 .Son of
Grand Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky ofVladimir-Suzdal , he ruledNovgorod from1172 to1175 . He was dethroned and expelled after the murder of his father in1175 . Defeated in a series of internal wars, he finally found a shelter in theNorthern Caucasus in the late1170 s. He was found among theKipchak , with whom he hoped to restore his rights to his father's princedom in 1184/85. In1185 , Georgian nobles arranged a marriage of Prince Yuri with QueenTamar of Georgia . As a consort he commanded, in 1186-7, a Georgian army which successfully raided the Seljuk possessions ofRüm in the west and the Ildenizid state inArran (Azerbaijan) in the east. However, Tamar soon got disappointed in her husband and divorced him in1187 . Said to be involved in sexual misdeeds, heavy drinker and ambitious, he was expelled from Georgia in1188 . Yuri allied himself with a powerful party of Georgian nobles led by VardanDadiani , Guzan ofKlarjeti and Botso Jakeli, and returned to lead a revolt against Tamar in1191 . The rebels proclaimed Yuri King of Georgia in the palace ofGeguti and captured several provinces in the southwestern Georgia, but were eventually crushed by the Queen’s devoted general Gamrekel Toreli at the battles ofTmogvi andErusheti . The rebels capitulated and Yuri was pardoned by Tamar. However, he revolted again in a few years and invadedKakheti province. Defeated in the vicinities ofKambechani , he was finally expelled from Georgia. Since then, Yuri disappeared from history.External links
