- Loyew
Loyew ( _be. Лоеў, Łojeŭ ; _ru. Лоев, Loyev) is a city in the
Belarus ian province of Homiel. Administrative centre ofLoyew Raion .The population is 7.5 thousand person (2001).
The settlement is located along the right coast of
Dnepr in a place of a confluence ofSozh .Loyew has old history, it has arisen on a place of an ancient site of ancient settlement of
dregovichs .First mention of settlement goes back to 1505.
The city is known for the fight on
July 31 ,1649 duringKhmelnytsky Uprising which took a place here.After division of
Rzecz Pospolita in 1793 Loyew became a part ofRussian empire . By the end of XIX century its population reached more than 4.5 thousand inhabitants.In December of 1926 Loyew was included in
Belarusian SSR and became the center ofraion . In 1938 the status of city has been given to it.In 1941-1943 the city lost nearby 1.5 thousand person.
In 1962-1966 Loyew entered into
Rechytsa Raion .In settlement there are building and dairy factories. From educational establishments the pedagogical school and musical school operate. Also in Loyew there is a House of culture and some libraries.
