"Bray" (DE-709), a "Rudderow"-class
destroyer escort , was named afterRaymond Leon Bray , who was born inGreenville, Texas on1 April 1918 . He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1940. He was killed in action atGavutu, Solomon Islands ,on7 August 1942 .Corporal Bray was posthumously awarded theNavy Cross for extraordinary heroism.The "Bray" was launched on
15 April 1944 at theDefoe Shipbuilding Company inBay City, Michigan , sponsored by Mrs. Mattie M. Bray, mother of Corporal Bray; and commissioned on4 September 1944, withCommander J. A. Hetherington II, USNR, in command."Bray" was assigned to
Escort Division 12 ,Atlantic Fleet , and during late 1944, participated inanti-submarine operations offLong Island , and conducted exercises with Americansubmarine s. Following repairs at theBoston Navy Yard as a result of a collision with the submarine USS "Cuttlefish" on8 December , "Bray" reported toNorfolk, Virginia , early in 1945, and conducted training for prospectivedestroyer anddestroyer escort crews. She later trained with submarine crews offNew London, Connecticut , until mid-July 1945. During this period, she also participated in occasional anti-submarine duty along the East coast. On19 March 1945 she steamed to the aid of the coastal minesweeper USS "Heroic", saving her from sinking.Between
15 July and18 September 1945, "Bray" was atCharleston Navy Yard where she underwent conversion to ahigh speed transport . She was reclassified APD-139 on16 July 1945. "Bray" later served as a training ship operating out ofMiami, Florida . She arrived atGreen Cove Springs, Florida , on7 December 1945, and was assigned to the16th Fleet . She was placed out of commission in reserve on10 May 1946 .References
