Major General Karol John Drewienkiewicz is a retired British Army Major-General. Born in 1946, he joined the Royal Engineers in 1966. He attended Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in engineering in 1970. He served for many years as an Army engineer, commanding 22 Engineer Regiment, serving as secretary to the UK Chiefs of Staff and commanding the Royal Engineers Recruit Training Brigade. He became Engineer-in-Chief of the Army in December 1994 and was promoted to the rank of Major General. He was posted to the NATO Headquarters Allied Land Forces Central Europe (LANDCENT) in Heidelberg in 1995, subsequently becoming the headquarters' Chief of Staff when it relocated to Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He left Sarajevo in August 1997 but continued to be involved in various capacities with the Balkans, serving as Military Advisor to the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Deputy Head of the Kosovo Verification Mission in the run-up to the 1999 NATO intervention in the Kosovo War. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the 1999 New Year's Honours. After his return to the UK, he was appointed as the Senior Army Directing Staff at the Royal College of Defence Studies. He retired from the Army in early 2001 and took up an academic vocation, teaching at the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre in Nova Scotia, Canada and as a Visiting Fellow at the Centre of International Studies at Cambridge University. He is the current President of the Cambridge University Engineers' Association.

Family

John is married to Christine Elizabeth Drewienkiewicz, a senior medical writer for Choice Pharmaceutical Services. Together they have two sons. Peter Michal Charles Drewienkiewicz, born August 2, 1979, and Robert Andrew David Drewienkiewicz, born April 24, 1981. Peter currently works for UBS Investment Bank in the City of London, while Robert is employed by HSBC in Hong Kong.
