26 June 1942 ) is an Americanpolitician and member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL). He is the son of the late Vice PresidentHubert Humphrey and the lateU.S. Senator Muriel Humphrey . He attendedAmerican University where he was a member of theAlpha Sigma Phi ,Beta Chi chapter, and is a graduate of theUniversity of Minnesota Law School . Humphrey was elected to theMinnesota Senate in 1972 and served as a state senator from 1973 to 1983. He was electedattorney general in 1982. He served as Attorney General ofMinnesota from 1983-1999. In 1988, he challenged incumbent Independent-RepublicanDavid Durenberger in the election for US Senate seat (a seat that his father and his mother previously held), but lost. He ran forgovernor of Minnesota in 1998 as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidate against the Reform Party (now known as the Independence Party) candidateJesse Ventura and Republican candidateNorm Coleman . He lost to Ventura. As attorney general he was one of the DFL Party's most popular candidates ever in terms of popular vote. He is married toNancy Lee Humphrey and is the father of three children, including Hubert H. "Buck" Humphrey IV. Hubert H. Humphrey III is currently a consultant with Tunheim Partners, a Minnesota based communications and public affairs firm.Humphrey is currently serving as the president of the Minnesota chapter of the AARP. He also sits on the board of the National AARP.
