Cayo District ofBelize . In2000 , Spanish Lookout had apopulation of 1,786 people. The village is populated by a community ofMennonite s.The citizens of this community speak
Plautdietsch ; most also speak English and Spanish. It is largely an agricultural community with some light industry, furniture making, prefabricated wood houses and the only oil field in production inBelize .There are three ways into Spanish Lookout. One requires the use of a hand cranked
ferry , one is a long dirt road that goes through the neighboring town ofBullet Tree , and one is across a steel bridge and the well paved road theMennonites built after years of promises to build one by the government and one failed attempt (it collapsed about half way through construction). Luke Espat of the PUP constructed this bridge. It's a great place to stop if you want to buy excellent ice cream. And to see a bunch of backwards people.
