private school located inTelluride, Colorado , in theSan Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. The Telluride Mountain School supports grade K-12 and Montessori. During the course of the year classes take trips to places around the country and around the world. These trips include different aspects of learning that the school views as important.chool Layout
The Telluride Mountain School is now located at its new facility at 200 San Miguel River Drive in Lawson Hill, just minutes from downtown Telluride and Mountain Village. This 14,000 sq. ft. space, which was the Scott Fly Rod building, has been completely remodeled by Ewers Architecture of
Golden, Colorado , and Fortenberry Construction, of Telluride, Colorado. The design includes many sustainable/green features, including angled walls with a curving band of translucent wall that transfers daylight far into the building, reducing the need for electric lighting; enlarged windows in the classroom areas to increase the amount of natural light; increased insulation to reduce heating costs; low-flush toilets; multi-level switching for classroom lighting for energy efficiency; low Volatile Organic Compound paints and water-based polyurethanes used throughout the building; bamboo plywood ("plyboo"), a sustainable "wood" (actually a grass) used in the construction of custom furniture, benches and wood accents; Eco-Color wood product for in-class cubbies; radiant in-floor heating; and more. The doors opened for students on September 5, 2006.The school has officially merged with the Telluride Montessori School and now offers comprehensive programs from preschool through high school. Highlights of the new facility include two parallel Pre-K/K (2 years 9 months through 6 years) Montessori classrooms with private playground space; a music room with full recording/editing suite for music teacher Mark Galbo (Director of the Telluride Rock n' Roll Academy) to teach the 1-12 graders music; an art room with potters' wheels, a kiln, a manual printing press and myriad other art supplies; an ultra-modern chemistry lab that is also perfect for other science applications; Harkness discussion tables for many of the classrooms; and many other great features for the school's small classes.
Telluride Mountain School received full accreditation through the Association of Colorado Independent Schools (ACIS) in 2006.
Activities
One major trip happens per year for every class. The extremity of the trip depends on the class ability and ages. In 2005, the senior class took their trip to
Oaxaca, Mexico for three weeks. There, they did extensive studies into language and arts.External links
