The GE Dash 8-32BWH, also known as the B32-8WH, P32-8WH, or P32BH is a modern diesel-electriclocomotive used byAmtrak to pull passenger trains. It is related to GE's popular range of widecab locomotives in the Dash-8 series.Twenty of these locomotives were delivered in 1991 and numbered 500 through 519. They were nicknamed '
Pepsi Cans' by manyrailfan s, due to being delivered in a wide-striped red, white, and blue paintlivery . Their repaint to their present-day appearances is called 'Diet Pepsi '. Today they are Amtrak's secondary locomotives. Their general usage is yard switching, but can substitute for Amtrak's main locomotive, theP42DC , if necessary. As of June 2006, they are currently in the process of being overhauled. The first Dash 8 to complete overhaul was number 507, which received "Phase V" paint. Several other units including numbers 500, 503, 505, 508, 510, and 514 have been repainted into this scheme as well.*517 Arrived into CHI from Beech Grove (8-17-2007) in new Phase V paint. Two of the locomotives (501 & 502) were purchased by the
California Department of Transportation and they were renumbered 2051 & 2052, and received theAmtrak California paint scheme. They are used on theCapitol Corridor andSan Joaquin trains.
