Tonbridge Grammar School is a state-funded Mathematics and Computing specialist grammar school in Tonbridge, United Kingdom. There are approximately 1050 students ranging from 11 to 18 years. It was previously known as Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls but with the introduction of boys in the sixth form in 2002, the school changed its name. The school motto is "Courage and Honour".

History

Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls began in 1905 with just 13 girls as pupils on the top floor of Tonbridge Library. The headmistress and only teacher was Miss Taylor. The school moved to its current site in Deakin Leas in 1913, after Tonbridge Library became too small to accommodate the growing numbers.

During the Second World War, the school fields were used to grow vegetables and bunkers were also built under the fields to accommodate pupils and staff in the event of an air raid.

Buildings and Property

The school has the following main buildings:

* The Main Building
* The Technology Block ("The Tech Block")
* The Mitchener Centre/The Humanities Block
* The Music Block
* The Huts - originally designed to be temporary, but have been in use since the 1930s. Cold in winter, hot in summer
* The Canteen, No comment.

The school also has a hockey pitch, an athletics track, 5 tennis courts (3 of which are also used as netball courts) and an open air swimming pool.

The New Building

The school has started to build a new part of the school, which will replace the Huts (about time), the Mitchener Centre, the Mathematics Corridor, the Music Block, the English Corridor and the Canteen. This new section stands behind the Technology Block, on the playing fields. The land which was previously occupied has been sold off for developers to build houses on. The school has received support from the Government to do so, but neighbours in Deakin Leas and Baltic Road are strictly opposed to the plans. It should be completed in approximately two years time.So far the steel structure part of the building has been built. It is predicted to be finished in May 2010.

Academic Achievements

The school often appears highly in league tables, and for the last few years has maintained approximately 20th place in the league table for the best state school in the UK.

Centenary Celebrations

In 2005, the school celebrated its centenary year by holding many events including a Centenary Pageant, a School Reunion and a Whole School Photograph.
