The English School is Kuwait's longest established private school. It was founded in 1953 and is the only not-for-profit school in the country. Control of the school lies with a Board of Governors rather than an owner. It was originally established by a group of parents under the auspices of the British Embassy and has expanded over the years in line with the increasing population and the decline in the trend of sending children to boarding school in their home countries. Initially the upper age limit was eight, but now the school covers ages 2 to 13. The majority of expatriate children between these ages in Kuwait attend the school. Regarding academic standards, the "Good Schools Guide International" stated in a review "Although not a hothouse, most children transferring locally or to the UK are able to gain entry to the schools of their choice." The school was closed during the 1990-91 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and for two months during the 2003 Iraq War. It was visited by the Duke of York to mark its first fifty yearsFact|date=February 2007. It is a member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools, a UK based association of preparatory schools.
