History

At a time when independent India's first hydro-electric dam project, the Hirakud Dam was nearing its completion in 1956, the first engineering college of the state was materialized. On 12th August, 1956 a long held dream of many prominent personalities including the then chief minister of Orissa Mr. Biju Pattanaik was fulfilled, just after 2 years of establishment of IIT, Kharagpur. The college started with only three departments (Civil, Mechanical and Electrical) with best technical facilities of that time and it still continues that heritage. At that time the current building was not finished so the college started in a building now known as "Bharati Club" and students use to live in quarters of Hirakud Dam project. This premiere technical institute, has created more than 16,000 dynamic engineers placed in various renowned organizations (like NASA, DRDO, Microsoft, NALCO) and many prestigious institutions (like MIT, Stanford, IIT).
UCE,Burla thus continues its legacy of excellence moulding many minds into knowledgeable and responsible technocrats and citizens.

Campus

Located at the foothills of the Hirakud Dam, Asia's longest earthen dam, UCE, Burla is few kilometers away from the intersection points of NH-06 and NH-42.Spreading over a land of 200 acres and amidst the hills and the river Mahanadi, the college witnesses picturesque sunrise and ever enchanting scenic beauty. The one way access route from NH-06 stretches upto the golden jubilee gate, standing tall at the entrance of college, the mark of 50 years of enviable performance.

To the left of the Gate stands the College Library, the oldest and the largest technical library in Orissa while to the other side there is the College Auditorium, again only one of its kind in the State.The campus encompasses various department buildings, the Administrative Block, a well equipped Workshop, one modern Central Internet Facility and a number of Laboratories. With a lot of importance on Physical Education, the college has a Gymnasium, a Yoga Center for its students. The campus also includes a large playground, one court each for Basketball, Volleyball, Lawn Tennis and Badminton for recreational purposes.
