Notable_instruments =Tom Petersson (
9 May 1950 , Rockford,Illinois ) is the bassist for therock band Cheap Trick .Career
Petersson contributes heavily to the writing of
music and is credited with inventing the 12 string bass guitar. Jol Dantzig ofHamer Guitars was the builder of the first 12-string bass, which expanded the 8-string bass concept by adding one more additional octave string to each bass string. It is basically a four string bass with two octave strings tuned in unison just above the fundamental bass string.Petersson plays bass as a second lead guitar on "He's a Whore" from Cheap Trick's debut album. He sings lead vocals on "I Know What I Want" and on live versions of "Waitin' For The Man".
Petersson left Cheap Trick shortly after the recording of "All Shook Up", causing the band to lose momentum and direction for several years. Petersson, however, released the solo
album "Tom Petersson And Another Language" and toured the North American club scene with his new group.Eventually realizing he and Cheap Trick were better together, Petersson rejoined the band in 1988 for their "
Lap of Luxury " album. However, Petersson's return was not enough to persuade executives at their label, Epic, to allow the band to go back to basics and record the kind of hard-edged music that made them famous. Instead, executives pressured the band to record pop songs in order to get some payback for the less than stellar non-Petersson albums. Despite going platinum and including the #1 hit song The Flame, Petersson blames "Lap of Luxury " for trapping them into a sound that they were not comfortable with, which led to the mediocre "Busted" and the end of their relationship with Epic.Tom Petersson continues to record and tour with Cheap Trick. Now on a new label, Cheap Trick has found more musical freedom and released "Rockford" in June 2006. "This new record has all the best elements of our entire catalogue. It's by far our best work yet," says Petersson.
Petersson also appeared on
Frank Black 's solo album, released in June 2006.External links
