- Kholm
Kholm ( _ru. Холм) is a town in the southern part of
Novgorod Oblast ,Russia , the administrative center of Kholmsky District. Its population is 4,300 (2003 est.); 4,325 (2002 Census). It is situated at the confluence ofLovat River andKunya River , 77 km north ofToropets , 93 km south-west ofStaraya Russa , and 200 km south ofNovgorod .The settlement was first noticed in 1144 as Kholm
Pogost (literally: "a hill cemetery"). During the Middle Ages the town, then a seat of thePrinces Kholmsky , withstood innumerable sieges by Lithuanians, Poles, and Swedes. In 1777 it was renamed into theuezd town of Kholmsk. DuringWorld War II it was occupied by theWermacht from 1941 to21 February 1944 , when it was liberated in the aftermath of theToropets-Kholm Operation .
