Paul MacLean (born 9 March, 1958 in Grostenquin, France and raised in Antigonish, Nova Scotia) is a retired professional ice hockey player who played for the St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, and, most notably, the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League.

Career

Player

MacLean played in the NHL for 11 seasons from 1980 to 1991. He played 719 career games, scoring 324 goals and 349 assists for 673 points. His best season statistically was the 1984–85 season when he scored 41 goals and 101 points. Although considered a Canadian, MacLean has the distinction of being the highest-scoring NHL player born in France, with 673 points. The second overall is Philippe Bozon with 41 points, who, unlike MacLean was also trained in France.

Coach

MacLean is currently an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings. In the 2007/2008 NHL season, MacLean won the Stanley Cup as assistant coach of the Red Wings. Before joining the Red Wings, MacLean was also an assistant coach for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim under Mike Babcock. Before becoming an NHL coach, MacLean lead the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League to the Colonial Cup Championship.

Personal life

MacLean lives in Detroit, and has three children. Erin now lives in Toronto, while A.J. played for the Halifax Mooseheads. Dave currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona as a video analyst under direction of Wayne Gretzky. He has a summer home in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada and will be bringing the Stanley Cup to Antigonish Arena on August 20, 2008 from 1pm to 5pm.
