Genioglossus Advancement

Genioglossus Advancement (GA), is a surgical procedure where the base of the tongue is pulled forward, usually to increase airway size due to deformity or a sleep breathing disorder - See Sleep Apnea.

Tongue muscles are attached to the lower jaw below the teeth.In this procedure, a small window or slice is made in the lower jaw.The piece of bone along with the attachment for the tongue is pulled forward and down, thenfastened to the outside of the lower jaw.A small screw or a plate is used to affix the bone.

Currently this procedure is very effective at treating OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) with a success rate between 50-75%.
