town of the Province of Barcelona inSpain (region ofCatalonia ) on the left bank of the River Anoia, a right-hand tributary of theLlobregat , and at the northern terminus of the Igualada-Martorell -Barcelona railway . Igualada is the central market of a richagricultural andwine -producing district. It consists of an old town with narrow and irregular streets and the remains of afortress and ramparts, and a new town which possesses regular and spacious streets and many fine houses. The local industries, chiefly developed since1880 , include the manufacture ofcotton ,linen ,wool ,ribbon s,cloth ,chocolate ,soap ,brandies ,leather , cards and nails. The famousmountain andconvent of Montserrat is 12 miles east.
