Pedro III (pronounced|ˈpedɾu) or Peter III (July 5 1717 – May 25 1786) became King of the Kingdom of Portugal and Algarves by the accession of his wife and niece Queen Maria I in 1777, and co-reigned alongside her until his death.

Pedro was the younger son of John V of Portugal and Maria Anna of Austria. Pedro was a younger brother of Joseph I of Portugal. Their maternal grandparents were Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor and Eleonore-Magdalena of Pfalz-Neuburg.

Pedro married Maria, Princess of Brazil, in 1760, at which time she was the heir to the throne then held by his brother José I. According to custom, Pedro thus became prince of Brazil in right of his wife. They had six children, of whom the eldest surviving son succeeded Maria as João VI on her death in 1816.

Pedro made no attempt to participate in government affairs, spending his time hunting or in religious exercises.

*Prince Joseph, August 20 1761-September 11 1788, Prince of Beira (1761-1777) and Prince of Brazil (1777-1788). Married his aunt Maria Francisca Benedita, Infanta of Portugal, but had no issue.

*Infanta Maria Isabel December 23 1766 - January 14 1777;
*Prince John Maria, May 13 1767 - March 26 1826, Prince of Brazil from 1788 until he succeeded Maria as the 27th (or 28th according to some historians) King of Portugal.
*Infanta Mariana, December 15 1768 - November 2 1788. Married Gabriel, infant of Spain, son of Charles III.
*Infanta Maria Clementina June 9 1774 - June 27 1776.
