By1954 , Scouting had become so popular in Arab countries that WOSM established the Arab Scout Region inDamascus, Syria .The Region comprises 17 members of
Scouting in WesternAsia and NorthAfrica , includingAlgeria ,Bahrain ,Egypt ,Jordan ,Kuwait ,Lebanon ,Libya ,Mauritania ,Morocco ,Oman , Palestine,Qatar ,Saudi Arabia ,Sudan ,Tunisia , theUnited Arab Emirates , andYemen .Although
Iraq is at present not a WOSM recognized nation, it has a Scouting movement and is among the first founders of the Scout Movement in the Arab Region. Scouting is also being developed inWestern Sahara with the assistance of Scouts from theCanary Islands .This region is the counterpart of the Arab Region of the
World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).In
2006 , Dr.Atif Abdelmageed Abdelrahman Ahmed of Sudan was named Director of the Arab Region.History
In August 1956, several thousand Scouts from all over the Arab world attended a
jamboree atAbukir ,Egypt .Ali al-Dandachi had done a great deal to encourage Scouting throughout theMiddle East , and during his term as a member of the International Committee he visited practically every country in the region. Shortly, an "Arab Scout Bureau" was established, withMohamed Ali Hafez of Egypt asSecretary-General . Once nascent Scouting receives WOSM recognition, the Arab Scout Region may also be inclusive of
Somalia (see postal cover graphic).The map on the main page for the Region's official website indicates that
Ethiopia ,Eritrea ,Djibouti , andSomalia are within the bounds of the region. Western Sahara , a disputed territory home to the Sahraoui Scout Association ( _ar. اتحاد الكشافة الصحراوي), is one of 35 countries whereScouting exists (be it embryonic or widespread) but where there is no National Scout Organization which is yet a member of theWorld Organization of the Scout Movement .
