- Piershill
Piershill is a suburb of north eastEdinburgh ,Scotland . In the shadow ofArthurs Seat .It is mainly residential, and partly formed out of ex-army properties, built in the 1920s by theEdinburgh Corporation Council . The east coast railway line betweenEdinburgh andLondon lies to the immediate north of the estate. The houses were built over the top of the foundations of the previous Piershill Barracks, The houses at the northern (railway) end of thePiershill estate still vibrate to the trains thundering past. (that part of the estate being built on a platform over thetopography which slopes north towardsCraigentinny ). Smokey Brae, immediately west ofPiershill , and the route toRestalrig travels beneath the railway line, immediately before the first bridge on the high wall to the right can be seen the remains of the original back gate toPiershill Barracks , now walled up but still with the legend "BACK GATE" visible on the wall, there is also a bricked up doorway to the left of the "BACK GATE".Mountcastle andWillowbrae are to the south,Jock's Lodge andMeadowbank just to the west,Portobello to the east andRestalrig andCraigentinny are to the north. The namePiershill is thought to come from a Colonel Piers who built a house on the high land overlookingRestalrig , land which subsequently became thecavalry installation at Piershill Barracks. There is a crossroads here, the main
A1 road (Great Britain) trunk route betweenEdinburgh andLondon passes here, making it a transport nexus, and also a supermarket.Community Flat
