Thomas Schaaf (born
April 30 ,1961 inMannheim ,Germany ) is a German former footballer (defender), now a manager.Schaaf is a
one club man : He has been at his current club,Werder Bremen , sinceJuly 1 ,1972 and was a youth team player until1978 . After turning professional he played a total of 262 Bundesliga games before retiring in1994 .In his time as a Bundesliga player he scored 13 goals and helped the team to the German Bundesliga Championship in 1988 and 1993, the DFB Cup in 1991 and 1994 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1992.
From
1987 to1995 he managed the youth team. After this he proceeded to manage the reserve team before taking over as the first team manager onMay 09 ,1999 .As a manager he led Werder to the DFB Cup in 1999, the Bundesliga and DFB Cup double in 2004 and the
Premiere Ligapokal in 2006 for the first time. From 2004 on the team has qualified for theUEFA Champions League every year.He is married and has a daughter called Valeska. Thomas Schaaf was named as the best manager of the future by the Spanish newspaper "AS".
