Off Tackle

An off-tackle run is a play in which the running back runs to the outside of a tackle through a hole created by the tackle and tight end. The fullback lead blocks and attempts to block the outside linebacker. The back also has the option of running to the outside of the tight end and some off-tackle plays are designed specifically for this.

Unlike a sweep, an off-tackle run requires specific blocks by the offensive tackle and tight end to create a hole. This often requires a coded discussion at the line when the defense shows its formation.

Power Off-Tackle:

The off-tackle play can also be run with a pulling guard. Typical blocking for this play would include a double team at the point of attack (the off-tackle area), a kick out block by the lead back (most often the fullback), and a lead block through the hole by the backside pulling guard. This blocking is very sound versus most defenses employed today at any level of football. Variations of this play include a halfback or receiver replacing either the guard or fullback.
