19th century

* 1848 – The first westbound train from Chicago, Illinois, pulled by the locomotive "Pioneer", departs on the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad (the oldest predecessor of Chicago and North Western Railway).
* 1854 – The Carillon and Grenville Railway, in Canada, opens.
* 1882 – The Seney Syndicate sells the Nickel Plate Road to William H. Vanderbilt, who also controlled the New York Central system, for $7.2 million.

20th century

* 1904 – The first 200 km (124 miles) section of the Baghdad Railway opens.
* 1995 – A school bus driver misjudges the space available between a level crossing and a traffic signal, leaving the rear of the bus over the track; the bus is hit by Metra train 624, killing seven of the students aboard the bus and injuring 21 others. The Fox River Grove level crossing accident is the deadliest Metra accident to date.

* 1780 – Philip Hone, first president of Delaware and Hudson Railway 1825-1826, is born (d. 1851).

Deaths

* 1923 – Henry Ivatt, Chief Mechanical Engineer of Great Northern Railway 1896-1911 (b. 1951).
