Performing Arts

Instrumental

There are three instrumental groups at Kearns High that compete in various competitions.

Wind Ensemble / Marching Band

The band includes Brass Instruments, Woodwind instruments, Percussion Instruments, and occasionally a Piano. There are occasionally some other instruments, but these make up the majority.

Students in Wind Ensemble / Marching Band practice their various pieces throughout the year, performing in both a Marching Band Family Show and Marching Band Spectacular Concert, a large concert known as the Winter Fest, and then competing in both a spring tour and a region competition in the spring.

Also students participating in the Wind Ensemble are part of the Marching Band, which performs at a variety of parades and competes in marching band competitions during the Fall. These students also comprise the pep band, which performs for pep assemblies, football games, and basketball games. The marching band has a long successful tradition going back to the 70's when they marched in both the Rose Parade and the Philadelphia Bicentenial Parade. They currently have the only high school marching band in the Granite School District.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band is an audition band, and only accepts those committed to learning the music. It emphasizes solos, and the learning of quite advanced pieces of music. They perform a Fall Concert with the Orchestra, at the Winter Concert with the Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and choral ensembles, and participate in their own region festival, as well as go on tour, in the early spring.

Orchestra

This group uses entirely String instruments. They also perform in a Fall Concert with the Jazz Ensemble, a large concert known as the Winter Fest, and have both their own tour and region festival in the spring. Occasionally they will include members of the Wind Ensemble to help them with pieces requiring wind and percussion instruments.

Many of these students are also participants in the Granite Youth Symphony which is made-up of some of the finest high school musicians in the area.

Vocal

Mixed Choir

Mixed Choir is the open choir that is available to all students who attend the school.

Polynesian Choir

The Polynesian Choir is the only school choir of its kind in the state of Utah geared towards students of Pacific Islander descent.

Concert Choir

Concert Choir is an audition choir at Kearns. The standard is a little higher, so the group performs more difficult pieces. As well as school concerts, they also perform in a region competition in the spring.

Madrigal Choir

The Madrigals are also an audition choir at Kearns. In order to help unify the choir, blend and talent are both key factors in the auditions. This group also performs at the choir concerts, and competes in a region competition in the spring. They are also required to prepare either a solo or smaller group number to be performed at that same competition.
